The most common preventable fatalities for infants or children under the age of one year are sleep related, both nationally and in South Carolina.   To address these preventable sleep-related deaths, the South Carolina Safe Sleep Initiative was developed in 2014, with the purpose to promote consistent and unified safe sleep messaging, education and awareness statewide to eliminate preventable sleep-related infant deaths and injuries.

Current areas of focus:

  • A safe sleep campaign that coordinates and consolidates information and resources to ensure we have the greatest impact and the best outcomes.
  • A virtual Safe Sleep Summit and other focused educational efforts, to inform, educate and prevent child fatalities related to preventable sleep related deaths.
  • A Consistent messaging and education through a South Carolina Safe Sleep Tool Kit.
